The County Department of Lands, Housing and Urban Development embarked on the formation of Bomet Municipality as per the Urban Areas and Cities Act 2011 being the County Government of Bomet Headquarters. Bomet Town was conferred the Municipality status by Her Excellency the Governor.

Bomet Municipality Board was formed and was granted the Municipal Charter by Her Excellency the Governor.
County Government of Bomet entered into the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP) grant from World Bank to support development of Urban areas within the Municipalities. The Governor signed KUSP participatory agreement which required participating counties to meet minimum conditions to qualify for the grant. Bomet County has so far met the minimum conditions and over the next six years, Bomet Municipality will benefit from Kenya Urban Support Programme to the tune of Kshs 168 million. The grant has been earmarked for urban development activities. Sotik town has also been prioritized for a facelift and with the appointment of the Town Management Committee, the initial Urban Development Plan has already commenced.
